Tips for Safe Eating & Drinking While Traveling

While you are traveling, it is very important that you take care of your health, specifically by watching what you are eating. It is much easier for your body to get sick while traveling, because there are a lot of new things to get used to, such as the time zone change. When in other countries, you must be careful with certain foods and the water because the acids in your stomach are not accustomed to new bacterias, etc.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention document that more than 10 million overseas travelers per year develop a sickness (i.e. diarrhea) caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasitic bugs in the food or water of another country. Don’t want to be one of these 10 million? Follow these tips:

  • Boiled food is in most cases, safe
  • Pack nonperishable foods with you which need no refrigeration
  • Try to avoid local fruit and vegetables, but if not, wash thoroughly before consuming
  • Buy, drink, and use bottled water (look for products with NSF mark)
