Wombat’s Hostels: Berlin, Munich & Vienna
When traveling throughout Europe on my Eurotrip with my friends, Vienna, Austria was our second to last stop. We booked all of our hostels in advance and were pretty excited about our Vienna hostel, because it was Wombat’s, and we’ve heard great things about these hostels. There are actually two Wombat’s hostels located in Vienna, and then there is one in Berlin and one in Munich (Germany). In Vienna, there’s “The Base” and “The Lounge”, and we stayed at “The Lounge” and had a great time.
The story behind the hostel, which I learned when staying there, is very interesting and pretty moving. It all began in 1988, when the two owners were staying in Melbourne. They were playing pool with a man they met in the bar, nicknamed “The Sucker,” and became great friends with him. He invited them to stay with him for a few days, so they did, and they learned he lived with 5 or 6 wombats, because he loves them. He also told them that he had a dream of one day opening a hostel and had the name picked out: Wombat’s Backpackers.
Two years later, the two guys decided to take a trip back to Melbourne and visit their friend. Come to find out, the man they met had actually died in an accident six months before. They knew from there that they had to carry on the man’s lifelong dream, and so they opened up 4 hostels and named them Wombat’s.
I liked the fact that the hostel I was staying at had an awesome story behind it, and decided to pass on this story and this hostel recommendation to those thinking of traveling to Vienna, Munich, or Berlin.
Everyone at the hostel was very nice and helpful, they had a great big kitchen area where you could cook food, and also lots of computers with internet access for cheap. The rooms were spacious, comfortable, and clean, and I have no complaints. My two favorite things about this hostel are the comfortable lounge area (shown above) made of all pillows where you could take a nap if you’d like, and the fact that there was a very nice bar located right in the hostel with happy hour, so you never had to leave if you didn’t want to. And, of course, Vienna is known for flaming shots… so those are always a plus ![]()
