The September Matchmaking Festival in Ireland
In Lisdoonvarna, Ireland, every September, a huge month-long Matchmaking Festival has been held since the 19th century. Back in those days, it was fairly rare for members of the opposite sex to meet, hang out, or flirt, because there were not really any places to do it that were accepted by society. Therefore, the shopkeepers, who knew everyone in town, would pair up potential matches and hope for a romance to blossom.
Today, this festival, located in County Clare, consists of a month full of parties and celebrations where it is very easy to meet new people. People take part in drinking, dancing, speed dating, horse races, and the International Barbeque Championship.
